WILMINGTON, De.. — Calling Amtrak critical to the economy, a group of business leaders and lawmakers from the Northeast urged Congress on Wednesday to approve billions of dollars in new funding for the passenger railroad this year.
The Business Alliance for Northeast Mobility urged Congress to provide Amtrak with a stream of money for the next several years before it adjourns for the year.
In June, the House approved its own Amtrak bill by a vote of 311-104. That measure would provide $14.4 billion and allow private competition for rail service in the Northeast Corridor.
Sen. Tom Carper, D-Del., acknowledged the Senate could derail Amtrak legislation even if negotiators fashion a compromise.
