The Brotherhood of Locomotive Engineers and Trainmen (BLET) is presently seeking applicants for the Director of the Arbitration Department to join our National Division office team. The successful candidate will have the flexibility to work remotely, but will be required to travel frequently to Chicago, IL, to engage with the National Railroad Adjustment Board (NRAB) and the First Division.
The Arbitration Director’s position is multifaceted, and its core duties require a solid knowledge base of Railway Labor Act (RLA) Section 3 arbitration procedures and Department of Transportation/Federal Railroad Administration Title 49, Parts 240 and 242 regulations. The successful candidate will be a valuable resource for BLET Local Division, General Committee, and National Division officers. The candidate must be extremely knowledgeable about the RLA, the National Agreement, and all applicable federal regulations. Additionally, they must understand the arbitration processes in discipline and work rule cases, and have experience and/or knowledge of passenger, freight, yard, and road job duties and responsibilities. The Director assists members who are involved in railroad arbitration and the decertification process. As a member of the First Division of the NRAB, the Director serves as a Partisan Arbitrator who is an advocate for the member and enforces the agreement language.
The successful candidate must be able to work both independently and collaboratively with others. The Director should be highly motivated, with strong multitasking and organizational skills, and a keen eye for detail, all essential for managing the complex demands of arbitration cases. The Director should have exceptional analytical, oral, and written communication skills.
