One thing the Railway Safety Act of 2023 does is mandate at least two-person train crews. That’s something the East Palestine train had on Feb. 3; if they didn’t, the BLET’s John Esterly says, the disaster could have been much worse.
“This is also a great example of the good. We had a multi-person crew in the cab of the locomotive in East Palestine,” said Esterly, who is Chairman of the BLET’s Ohio State Legislative Board. “They separated the engines, they removed diesel fuel from the source of fire, they saved their own lives, they saved potentially lives of the citizens of East Palestine, preserved event recorder data. I mean these are all of the things that the second crew member is there to do and he was there to act immediately.”
