Roughly 325 passengers were quickly evacuated just before a SEPTA commuter train went up in flames on February 6 near Crum Lynne Station in Ridley Park, Pa. The six-car train was traveling from Philadelphia, Pa. to Newark, Del. when it caught fire, causing significant delays along the Northeast Corridor.
The National Transportation Safety Board is investigating the incident with assistance from the BLET Safety Task Force. While the BLET cannot discuss specifics of the incident or speculate on a potential cause due to its Party Status, SEPTA General Chairman Don Hill praised train crew members for safeguarding the train’s passengers.
“The crew performed admirably,” Hill said. “The engineer and conductor removed the passengers from the first coach. Shortly afterward, flames erupted on the first car. The crew reacted professionally by safely evacuating the train and keeping the situation under control.”
