The last passenger train between New Orleans and Mobile, Ala., ran more than 15 years ago — before Hurricane Katrina sent a massive storm surge barreling into the Gulf Coast, damaging roads and infrastructure and transforming the landscape of the Gulf for years to come. But while freight trains have long since returned to service, the people of the Gulf Coast will have to wait at least a little bit longer for passenger trains to start running again.
