CLEVELAND, March 30 — On April 4, 1968, Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. was assassinated while in Memphis supporting the collective bargaining rights of striking sanitation workers. This April 4, the battles across the states may be different, but the war on workers’ rights remains the same as it did 43 years ago.
To commemorate this connection between past and present struggles, the Teamsters are helping to organize a national day of solidarity with workers in Wisconsin, Ohio, and all across the United States.
Teamsters will celebrate the day by pledging to reach out, educate and advocate for workers’ rights.
Around the country, unions and their allies will march, rally, lay wreaths and eat barbecue. Major rallies are planned for Memphis, Boston, New York, Atlanta, Tampa, Chicago, Philadelphia, Los Angeles, Washington, D.C., Seattle and more than 100 other cities.
