NORTH BERGEN, N.J. — A northbound freight train derailed just north of the Paterson Plank Road rail bridge on the Conrail tracks near Tonnelle Avenue around 7:30 a.m. yesterday, a spokesman for Conrail said.

Ten cars belonging to CSX jumped off the tracks, with two rolling over onto their sides, officials said.

John Enwright, a spokesman for Conrail, said most of the derailed cars were empty, but that others contained paper pulp. None of the cars contained hazardous materials, he said. Calls to CSX were not returned by press time.

Heavy lifting equipment was needed to put the cars back on the tracks, he said.

Officials said the cause of the derailment is still under investigation.
