GILLETTE, Wyo. — Twelve BNSF rail cars full of coal derailed at a switching yard near here but caused no injuries or disruptions in traffic, a company spokesman said.

The train originated at Black Thunder mine southeast of Wright and was headed for Missouri when it derailed at about 6:30 p.m. Wednesday, spokesman Gus Melonas said.

Melonas said the train had 135 coal hoppers and three locomotives and was moving at 10 mph.

Only a little coal spilled from the cars, he said.

The cause of the derailment was under investigation.
