CHARLEMONT, Mass. — Railroad officials worked Monday to clear 14 cars of an eastbound freight that derailed on a section of tracks that run along the Deerfield River.

Authorities said at least six of the cars carried propane and one was carrying liquid chlorine. No spills or injuries were reported. However, classes were canceled Monday at the nearby Charlemont Elementary School and South River Road, just east of the Berkshire East Ski Area, remained closed.

The cars, part of a 42-car Guilford Rail System freight train, jumped the tracks about 6 p.m. Sunday. The cause of the derailment was under investigation, officials said.
