JACKSON, Miss. — One of two men hospitalized following a train-garbage truck collision in central Mississippi remains in critical condition.

John Brown and another Waste Management worker, Robert Purnell, were taken to University of Mississippi Medical Center by helicopter after Tuesday’s crash.

The 44-year-old Brown remains critical Thursday. Purnell, also 44, is listed in serious condition. It is unclear what their injuries are.

Officials say it’s unknown if the driver of the truck was racing to beat the train or if he didn’t see the Amtrak passenger train.

The train had traveled from Chicago and was bound for New Orleans.
