ST. PETERSBURG, Russia — A commuter train derailed as it entered a station in St. Petersburg on Monday, killing four people standing on a platform and injuring six others, according to the Associated Press.

The electric train was being tested following major repairs when the brakes failed and the first two cars jumped the rails, crashing onto the platform, the St. Petersburg Civil Defense and Emergency Service said. There were no passengers aboard.

Officials said they were investigating whether the train started moving on its own when the driver left for a few minutes. The Baltic Station, where the accident occurred, was closed to train traffic for most of the day.

The station is a hub for commuter trains to St. Petersburg’s suburbs and the czarist palaces that are popular tourist destinations.
