WASHINGTON, D.C. — Edward R. Hamberger, President and CEO of the Association of American Railroads, today announced the appointment of Robert VanderClute as the new senior vice president for safety and operations. VanderClute will direct the Association’s safety and operations department — which oversees the industry’s interchange standards, quality assurance programs, customer issues, safety initiatives, and environmental issues.

“This is an exciting time for our industry and we are pleased to have a railroad veteran like Bob managing many important activities for the Association.” said Hamberger.

VanderClute started his career with the New York Central, then spent 27 years with Amtrak, rising to the position of vice president of operations and chief operating officer. For the past five years, he has served as vice president for rail with Parsons Brinckerhoff, one of the world’s leading planning, engineering, and construction management organizations. Hamberger noted, “Bob has had an impressive career touching on all aspects of railroading. He brings a wealth of experience to the AAR.”

Mr. VanderClute received his Bachelor of Science degree from University of Tennessee, Knoxville and also completed the transportation executive program at the Harvard Business School.
