For the week ending Dec. 10, 2022 (Week 49), total U.S. rail traffic was down 2.5% over the same week last year; carloads came in 1.3% higher while intermodal volume continued its downward trend, dipping 5.8%, according to the Association of American Railroads’ (AAR) Dec. 14 report. For the first 49 weeks of this year, U.S. railroads reported cumulative volume of 11,376,119 carloads, a 0.1% boost over the same point in 2021; and 12,810,570 intermodal units, a 4.9% drop from 2021. Total combined U.S. traffic for the first 49 weeks of this year was 24,186,689 carloads and intermodal units, down 2.6% compared with 2021.
