WASHINGTON, D.C. — The following statement was issued yesterday by Edward R. Hamberger, President and CEO of the Association of American Railroads:
“The Administration’s principles announced on Thursday are a valuable contribution to the ongoing national debate about the future of intercity passenger rail service.
“As policy makers continue this debate, however, they must recognize that America’s economic strength and success depend on an efficient freight rail network.
“The Association of American Railroads is deeply concerned about the proposal to franchise Amtrak’s operating authority and how that could adversely affect the world’s premier freight rail system. We look forward to working with the Administration, Congress, and other interested stakeholders to develop sound freight and passenger rail policy.”
