TACOMA, Wash. — A locomotive hit a train car, slicing open a fuel tank and dumping 200 to 300 gallons of diesel on the ground Sunday in Fife, a Tacoma fire official said.

The locomotive and train car were being switched in a rail yard near 2700 20th Street E. about 10 a.m. when the accident happened, said Fire Captain Dan Crotty. The fire department’s hazard materials team responded to the incident, as well as a private environmental services contractor, he said.

The company removed the damaged tank and cleaned up the fuel spill, Crotty said.
