(The AFL-CIO issued the following news release on August 27.)
WASHINGTON — AFL-CIO President John Sweeney and Secretary-Treasurer Richard Trumka will discuss the urgency to create good jobs for working men and women at a Labor Day week media roundtable Thursday, August 28 at 11:30am. Since President Bush took office, the country has lost nearly 3 million jobs and the economy has stalled under policies that benefit the wealthy and hurt working Americans
This Labor Day, workers say they want good jobs an unchanged overtime pay policy, affordable health care, retirement security, good schools for their children and the freedom to form unions. Research shows that more than 40 million Americans would like to form unions to improve their lives but too few will get that chance because employers routinely violate their rights. The union movement is calling on elected leaders, communities and people of faith to support workers in their efforts to come together in unions.
