WASHINGTON — Representatives of the AFL-CIO rail affiliates met with U.S. Representative Jim Oberstar, Ranking Democratic member of the House Transportation and Infrastructure Committee, last week in Washington, D.C. to discuss rail crossing safety.
Representative Oberstar sent a letter to Kenneth Mead, the Inspector General at the U.S. Department of Transportation, requesting a grade crossing safety audit. The request came as a result of a recent series of articles in the New York Times that called into question the effectiveness of the Federal Railroad Administration’s efforts to inspect and maintain the safety of highway-rail grade crossings.
