ROSSVILLE, Tenn. — Officials in Fayette County have identified a 500-acre site suited for a sprawling truck-to-rail intermodal terminal for Norfolk Southern Corp.
Norfolk Southern, the largest rail carrier of metals and automotive products in North America, runs about 20 trains daily through Memphis.
Until recently, it had focused on a different Fayette County site, but nearby residents had raised objections.
Now, according to the Memphis Commercial Appeal, Rossville town Recorder Becky Feathers says the board of mayor and aldermen may vote to begin annexing the new site for possible rezoning as early as Monday.
Norfolk Southern has been pursuing development of an intermodal facility, where freight is transferred between trucks and rail cars, in the Memphis area as part of a $2.5 billion-plus effort to upgrade its capacity across the Southeast.
