FARGO, N.D. — Although the funding is not yet in place, it appears Amtrak’s Empire Builder may be rescued from the flooded Devils Lake Basin.

BNSF Railway, Amtrak and a federal-state coalition agreed Wednesday in Washington, D.C., to split the estimated $97.4 million cost of rebuilding a 17-mile stretch of flood-threatened track and two bridges near Churchs Ferry, N.D.

Amtrak service resumed Wednesday for the first time since June 1, between St. Paul and Seattle and Portland. The first westbound train, which was sold out, was expected to arrive in Grand Forks at 4:52 a.m. today, while the eastbound train is set for an arrival at 12:57 a.m. Friday.
