NEW YORK — Cooperation between Amtrak and District police has helped keep more than a half million dollars in drugs off the streets of New York City. The two agencies worked together twice in 24 hours to pull off major drug busts at Union Station, reports WJLA.
Two people from New Jersey were arrested yesterday morning after police searched their luggage on a Miami to New York bound train. William Vargas off Passaic and Ada Martinez of Elizabeth were taken into custody around six a.m. yesterday after police discovered four kilograms of cocaine in 60 packets sewn into their clothing. Police place the value of those drugs at about $400,000.
Metropolitan Police investigators were at Union Station again this morning when another Miami to New York train pulled into the station. This time they searched the luggage of Yank Garcia Torress of Caracas, Venezuala. They found seven plastic bags filled with a white powder police say may be heroin valued at more than $150,000.
All three suspects face charges of possession with intent to distribute illegal drugs.
