OAKLAND, Calif. — Effective Friday, February 1, 2002 the highly successful Amtrak Capitol Corridor Transit Transfer Program, which began last May with AC Transit and Sacramento Regional Transit District, expands effective February 1, 2002 to include the Central Contra Costa Transit Authority’s County Connection.
With Transit Transfers, Capitol Corridor train riders my transfer at no charge to any local service bus of AC Transit at Richmond, Berkeley, Emeryville, Oakland, Hayward and Fremont (except buses that make the trans-bay crossing to San Francisco) and Sacramento RT buses and light rail at the Amtrak Sacramento Station, and now on County Connection buses at the Martinez Amtrak Station.
While aboard the train, ticket-carrying passengers ask the conductor for an Amtrak Capitol Corridor Transit Transfer. The conductor will give the passenger a two-part validated transfer good through the dates punched on the transfer. One transfer will be good for an immediate connection and one may be used within the validation date for a return trip to the train.
“The Transit Transfer Program has been extremely successful in encouraging passengers to take connecting public transportation to their final destination,” said Eugene K. Skoropowski, Managing Director of the Capitol Corridor Joint Powers Authority (CCJPA). From May through September, the number of train riders transferring to AC Transit buses has grown 80% from May through September. And, on Sacramento RT, connecting passengers have increased 90%.
In addition, Capitol Corridor passengers may receive a 20% discount on BART tickets purchased aboard the trains. A $5 BART ticket is available for $4 in the train’s Club/Cafe Car. Passengers may connect directly to BART trains at the Richmond Amtrak/BART Intermodal Station.
The CCJPA manages this Amtrak intercity passenger train service which offers 18 daily trains between Sacramento and Oakland with many trains continuing to Hayward, Fremont, Santa Clara and San Jose and one daily train between Sacramento and Auburn in the Sierra foothills. The Capitol Corridor is operated for the CCJPA by Amtrak in partnership with Caltrans and the Union Pacific Railroad.
