BALTIMORE — Amtrak crews worked through the night at the scene of a derailment south of Baltimore and the railroad expects to resume service between Washington and Baltimore tomorrow morning. Customers should expect some delays during the early morning hours and are encouraged to call 1-800-USA-RAIL for more information about arrival and departure times.

Amtrak train #90, the Palmetto, collided with MARC (Maryland Rail Commuter) train #9437 at approximately 5:37 PM, derailing the lead locomotive on the Amtrak train and the two rear cars of the MARC train.

Four MARC passengers and two Amtrak crewmembers experienced minor injuries; all but one were taken to local hospitals.

The Amtrak train consists of 2 engines, 8 passenger cars and 3 road-railers, and was carrying approximately 140 passengers and crew. It originated in Miami and was destined for New York City.

The MARC train, with 1 engine and 6 passenger cars, had just stopped in Baltimore Penn Station and was headed to Washington Union Station.

Amtrak established an 800 number for information for family members of passengers aboard the train. The number is 1-800-523-9101. The train derailed on tracks owned, operated and maintained by Amtrak.
