BOSTON — An Amtrak employee suffered an apparent heart attack and later died after a train struck a piece of construction equipment in Boston this morning.

Amtrak spokesman Cliff Cole says the Albany-to-Boston train was near its final destination of South Station when the accident happened just before 2 a-m.

The equipment belonged to a contractor for the MBTA, which owns the tracks.

Cole says the person who died was an Amtrak employee working on the tracks in conjunction with the work crew. The man’s name was not immediately released.

None of the 23 passengers on the train was hurt.

Cole says the equipment was improperly placed on the track. He says the train was traveling slightly below the 30 mile-per-hour speed limit.
