JACKSON, Miss. — Amtrak’s passenger rail service, suspended due to Hurricane Katrina, is being extended in Mississippi and Louisiana.

The route for City of New Orleans, which normally provides daily service between New Orleans and Chicago, will be extended to Hammond, La., beginning today.

The Crescent, which normally operates daily service between New Orleans and New York, will extend service to Meridian today.

There currently are no plans to extend the Sunset Limited route beyond Los Angeles and San Antonio. Prior to the hurricane the line ran between Los Angeles and Orlando, Fla.
