MARTINEZ, Calif. — An Amtrak locomotive jumped the track and struck a piece of Union Pacific equipment Monday evening, but neither the crew nor passengers were injured, a spokeswoman said.
The accident occurred shortly before 6 p.m. as Amtrak’s Capitol Corridor train was en route from the Bay Area to Sacramento, said Amtrak spokeswoman Vernae Graham.
The derailment affected only the lead locomotive and occurred about a half-mile west of the Martinez Amtrak station at the Martinez Regional Shoreline Park.
The locomotive remained upright, although passengers were expected to be delayed, Graham said.
