HARTFORD, Conn. — Amtrak will lower fares and add additional trains on its Springfield, Mass. to New Haven route, the railroad announced Tuesday.

The commuter rail service is adding a 7:15 a.m. southbound departure from Springfield, which arrives in New Haven at 8:35 a.m.

The addition adds five departures per week, bringing weekday trains along the route up to 16.

Fares will also be lowered by close to 50 percent for some destinations, the company said.

Monthly rail fares between Springfield and New Haven will drop from $284 to $171; the Hartford to Springfield monthly pass falls from $142 to $81 and the Hartford to New Haven route falls from $221 to $108.
