WASHINGTON, D.C. — Amtrak said Thursday that a record 2.1 million passengers rode its trains in January, marking 15 consecutive months of increased traffic.

CEO Joe Boardman predicted that rising fuel prices will boost ridership. He said the rise in ridership demonstrated a need for a subsidized intercity passenger rail system.

Last month, ridership increased 4.6 percent over January 2010, a gain of nearly 94,000 riders.
