PROVIDENCE, R.I. — Amtrak resumed service on the Providence, R.I., line Thursday after an investigation concerning a train that struck three people, killing one, Amtrak said.

The Acela train 2154 struck two Amtrak employees and a contractor at approximately 1:15 p.m., with one reported killed and the two others hospitalized with serious injuries, a statement said.

Service on the MBTA line between Providence and Boston, Mass., resumed at 3:48 p.m., Amtrak said.

Amtrak did not release the names of those struck.

It said 162 passengers and six employees were on board the train at the time of the accident. The train was traveling at 55 miles per hour.

The three victims were inspecting the rails when the train struck them.
