(The following story by Paul Makishima appeared on the Boston Globe website on June 10.)
BOSTON — With gas now at $4 a gallon, here’s a bit of bad news: You’re going to have one less transportation option for a few days if you’re headed to New York.
From Saturday to Tuesday, there will be virtually no Amtrak service between Boston and New York as Amtrak does some work on the 90-year-old Thames River Bridge, between Groton and New London, Conn.
Amtrak says that the work is necessary to ensure safety. The upside for Amtrak customers is that the rail service promises to do maintenance “blitz” between Boston and New Haven in the four days when service is suspended. The end result will hopefully be a smoother ride and greater reliability.
Now those reading carefully will note that I said there will virtually be no Boston-New York service. Amtrak will be running a special train Sunday-Tuesday that will go to New York via Springfield, a 5-6 hour trip.
