WASHINGTON — Amtrak will require reservations for all but a few trains on its flagship Northeast Corridor service by the end of next month, the railroad said on Monday.

Amtrak sometimes oversells its popular regional trains between Boston and New York and New York and Washington, which permits unreserved ticket purchases but can leave passengers without seats.

But beginning April 25, Amtrak will require reservations seven days a week and deny same-day sales if seats are sold out.

Amtrak has required reservation on its weekend trains since November 2004.

Metroliner and high-speed Acela service currently require reservations for all trains.

Amtrak is trying to operate more efficiently, and the change will allow it to better monitor passenger demand and adjust train capacity.

The change does not affect certain trains operating between New York and Philadelphia as well as some service in New York State and New England.
