ROCKINGHAM, Vt. — With repairs to the Bellows Falls rail tunnel nearly complete, Amtrak was able to get passengers of its Vermonter service out of buses and back onto the rails today.
Service had been disrupted north of Springfield, Massachusetts, since Friday, while crews worked to lower the track level in the tunnel by about three feet.
The Vermonter travels from St. Albans, southeasterly across Vermont to the Connecticut River Valley and on through New York to Washington, making one trip south and one back north per day.
The change in the tunnel’s configuration had not been made for Amtrak; the changes were made to accommodate new taller, freight trains.
