(The following story by Brad Cooper appeared on the Kansas City Star website on July 30.)
KANSAS CITY, Mo. — Kansas City is about to get back its morning train service to St. Louis.
Union Pacific is nearing completion of track work that forced Amtrak to delay its daily morning train out of Kansas City until 12:30 p.m. But beginning Aug. 8, Amtrak will start running a train out of Kansas City at 7:30 a.m. Amtrak’s afternoon train will depart Union Station at 4 p.m.
Amtrak uses tracks owned by Union Pacific, which is undertaking $27 million of rail work between St. Louis and Jefferson City. There will be some work through the rest of the year, but it’s not expected to substantially affect service.
Amtrak is offering half off the cost of a second Kansas City-St. Louis ticket through Dec. 10.
