READING, Pa. — On the platform at the Reading Railroad’s Outer Station, a young man in an Army uniform bids farewell as he boards a passenger car. His girlfriend leans forward in anticipation of a parting embrace. His elderly parents wear expressions of foreboding. The scene, depicted in a painting by James L. Holton, was repeated countless times as Berks County men and women marched off to World War I and World War II. The painting is among 44 Holton works on display at the Reading Railroad Heritage Museum in Hamburg.
