NORTH PLATTE, Neb. — On Christmas Day, a train came to a screeching halt in Hershey, as a locomotive engineer protected a little girl who had wandered onto the tracks.
As his westbound train pulled through Hershey around 2:15 p.m., engineer Ted Stone saw a small child ahead, playing near the tracks, according to the Lincoln County Sheriff’s Office. The little girl was between the track the westbound train track and a siding track.
Stone threw the train into an emergency stop, and as it slowed, he jumped off and grabbed the three-year-old girl to keep her from harm, Lt. Dan Newton said.
Stone and his conductor requested PEER Support – a program in which train crews receive assistance in coping with a stressful incident.
