On March 2, Rep. Chris Deluzio (D-PA), along with co-leads Nick LaLota (R-NY), Michael Rulli (R-OH), John Garamendi (D-CA), introduced a companion bill to the Railway Safety Act of 2026 in the U.S. House Representatives. It matches the Senate measure that was introduced by Senators Jon Husted (R-OH) and Maria Cantwell (D-WA) on February 24.
This legislation is designed to bring much needed safety reforms to the rail industry to better protect railroad workers and the communities served by the nation’s largest railroads.
BLET National President Mark Wallace thanked Representative Deluzio and fellow Representatives for introducing the bill.
“The Railway Safety Act of 2026 cuts across party lines to ensure carriers follow commonsense rules, including two-person crews, set standards for defect detectors, safer requirements for inspections and hazardous materials notifications, and increased penalties for violations,” said Wallace. “Railroads have proven time and again that they can’t be trusted to implement these necessary changes on their own. It’s up to Congress to make them happen. That will only happen with the Railway Safety Act. We look forward to working with leaders from both parties in both chambers of Congress to pass the Railway Safety Act and keep our communities and our crews safe.”
