(The BLET’s Pennsylvania State Legislative Board issued the following news release on May 10.)

WILKES-BARRE, Pa. — As summer approaches, sure to bring record tourism and millions of additional travelers throughout every region in Pennsylvania, Ken Kertesz, Legislative Board Chairman of the Brotherhood of Locomotive Engineers and Trainmen reminds the traveling public to be, “just a little more cautious when moving in and around our rail systems.”

Kertesz said Pennsylvania’s rail system enjoys one of the best safety records in the world. “Our systems are efficient, courteous and safe,” he said. “There’s no reason for undo concern when using public transportation in our state.”

“We just think it’s prudent to remind travelers to be aware of their surroundings. Trust your instincts about unusual behavior, odd packages, trash, backpacks, bags and luggage in your environment,” he said.

“A quick check under seats, overhead racks, nearby trash containers helps –and if you see anything unusual, just inform the nearest rail worker and continue to enjoy your safe, clean and efficient train rides all summer.”

Kertesz said he supports Homeland Security Secretary Tom Ridge’s request to raise public awareness to make passengers, rail employees and law officers more alert to potential security threats.

“We are sending a checklist of ‘Summer Alert Recommendations’ to our members, and we are requesting funds to print pamphlets with security tips for distribution to the traveling public,” Kertesz added. “We’re having a hard time finding the funds to produce it, but we’re working on it.”

Founded on May 8, 1863, the Brotherhood of Locomotive Engineers is the senior rail labor organization in North America. This past December, the BLET merged with the Teamsters to work together on transportation security issues.
