LINCOLN, Neb. — The nation’s freight railroads have agreed with the Brotherhood of Maintenance of Way Employes Division (BMWED) to extend negotiations beyond a “cooling-off” period set to expire Dec. 6, when the rail unions that have not settled a new contract legally can strike, or the railroads can lock workers out.
But the agreement to extend talks was contingent upon similar agreements being reached with the American Train Dispatchers Association and the Brotherhood of Locomotive Engineers and Trainmen, two other unions that have not yet reached contract settlements with the railroads. The engineers’ union had no comment Monday, and the dispatchers’ union couldn’t be reached for comment.
