EDGEMONT, S.D. — Eight cars of a Burlington Northern Santa Fe railroad freight train left the track Sunday in Edgemont, a BNSF spokesman said Monday.

The train, carrying export clay, was in the BNSF yard, heading toward the main track when the accident occurred Sunday about 3:30 p.m., Gus Melonas said in a telephone interview.

None of the cars tipped over, and none of the clay spilled, he said. No injuries were reported, and no hazardous material was being hauled, according to Melonas.

Crews worked Monday to fix the situation. “Late today or tomorrow the yard track damage will be repaired,” Melonas said, adding that the main line remained open.

“We’re investigating the cause,” he said.

The train’s destination was Vancouver, Wash.
