MAPLETON, N.D. — About 20 cars of an eastbound BNSF freight train derailed near here early Monday, but no one was hurt and the cars remained upright, authorities said.

“They’re still upright, but they’re off the main track,” Casselton Assistant Fire Chief Al Runck said.

“A couple of cars have paint on them, some have battery acid, and there’s a chlorine tanker car involved but there are no leaks or anything serious,” he said.

BNSF was clearing snow off access roads along the tracks so authorities could get a closer look, Runck said.
