GRAND FORKS, N.D. — A train pulling cars loaded with coal derailed Wednesday morning, and one car dumped its contents.

The accident happened across from the American Crystal Sugar Co. in East Grand Forks. There were no injuries, and no hazardous material was involved in the accident.

The Burlington Northern Santa Fe switch engine derailed at a slow rate of speed, said Gus Melonas, BNSF spokesman.

Another car’s wheels came off the track, and a minimal amount of damage was done to the track, he said. Each car carries up to 100 tons of coal.

Melonas said rerailing equipment was on its way to a local business, and the line was expected to be open by late Wednesday.

Officials are on site investigating the cause, Melonas said.
