BILLINGS, Mont. — Twelve cars of a BNSF coal train derailed early Friday near Anita, Mont., about 35 miles northeast of Billings.
BNSF spokesman Gus Melonas, in Seattle, said there were no injuries.
He says the train, traveling at 17 mph, was carrying coal from the North Antelope coal mine in Wyoming’s Power River Basin to Columbia, Wis.
Coal was spilled as five cars tipped on their sides, he said. Six others are in accordion position.
Crews from Billings and from Gillette were on the scene, there is no environmental threat and an investigation is under way, he said.
BNSF traffic is being rerouted on alternate lines.
