NUBIEBER, Calif. — Nobody was hurt when five locomotives and seven cars from a Burlington Northern Santa Fe train derailed in remote Northern California.

The derailment happened in an area known as Big Valley, about 70 miles northeast of Redding.

One car struck an unoccupied railroad tool shed.

A two-mile stretch of Highway 299 was closed in both directions for several hours and dozens of residents were evacuated because at least one car was carrying liquid propane.
The road reopened and residents were allowed to begin returning home by late afternoon after crews determine there was no leak.

An official with Fort Worth-based BNSF says other train cars were carrying malt for brewing beer but all remained upright after they ran off the tracks.

The train originated in Pasco, Washington, and was headed to Barstow, California.
