FORT WORTH, Texas — Burlington Northern Santa Fe Corp., the U.S. railroad, is looking to supply East Coast utilities with coal from the Powder River Basin in Wyoming as exports of U.S. East Coast coal rise, the company’s top executive said on Tuesday.

“We’re in the talking stages right now and we’d like to move to the shipping stages soon.” Chief Executive Matt Rose told Reuters in an interview at the railroad’s headquarters in Ft Worth, Texas.

BNSF is also researching the possibility of exporting Powder River Basin coal if the dollar stays weak and said, long-term, the railroad’s biggest growth should come from “our trucking partners” if fuel prices remain high.
