COLLEGE STATION, Texas — The circumstances that led a conductor to be outside a moving train before he fell to his death in Grimes County remained under investigation late Monday by federal and railroad officials. The night before, emergency responders found the body of Lumberton resident Stacy Lee Rieger on the Navasota River bank about 50 feet below the metal railroad trestle not far from the River Haven subdivision, which is off Texas 105.

The Burlington Northern Santa Fe Railway and the National Transportation Safety Board have separate inquiries into the accident. BNSF’s engineer told authorities that Rieger –who worked for the company for 41/2 years — was leaning over the rail of a catwalk to check fuel levels and was hit by a crossbeam on the bridge, according to the incident report.
