RIVERSIDE, Calif. — The derailment of a BNSF Railway Co. freight train in Highgrove over the weekend apparently was triggered by failed wheel bearings in one of the train cars, a company spokesman said.

Ten cars carrying shipping containers derailed Saturday on BNSF tracks between Center and Main streets, prompting the closure of the two streets, as well as Palmyrita Avenue. The streets had reopened by Sunday.

A trackside sensor had detected a problem, and the crew was stopping the train to inspect the wheels when the cars left the tracks, BNSF spokesman Steve Forsberg said. The cars stayed upright, and no one was hurt.
