DENTON, Texas — A dispute between a power agency and a railroad company over the cost of shipping coal from Wyoming to Texas is being blamed for higher electric bills in Denton and possible rate increases in three other cities.

Fort Worth-based BNSF Railway recently started charging more to haul coal from Wyoming to a Southeast Texas coal plant run by the Texas Municipal Power Agency, which supplies power to Bryan, Denton, Garland and Greenville. The agency is fighting the increase before a federal board, but officials say it’s unclear how long the dispute will last.

In the meantime, residents of the four cities are facing the prospect of higher electric rates as the agency passes on the unexpected cost increase.
