BARSTOW, Calif. — Authorities say 11 cars of a freight train carrying new automobiles have derailed outside Barstow.
Newberry Springs Fire Chief R.M. Springer says no one was hurt in the accident, which happened just after 2 p.m. Sunday.
A witness told fire officials that the cars went off the track as the train went over the Newberry Road crossing in the desert, just north of Interstate 40. Five of the derailed cars rolled onto their sides.
Authorities say the only damage was to the rail cars, belonging to Burlington Northern Santa Fe Railway, and the vehicles inside.
A representative from the railroad could not be reached early Monday.
Barstow is about 100 miles northeast of Los Angeles.
