(The following story by Craig Andres appeared on television station KCTV’s website on April 26.)
JOHNSON COUNTY, Kan. — A train carrying UPS cargo from Chicago to the Dallas-Fort Worth area derailed early Monday morning in Johnson County.
About 20 cars jumped the rails at West 167th Street and Clare Road near Gardner, Kan., KCTV5’s Craig Andres reported on “More in the Morning.”
The engineers said they heard a thump, and then the train derailed, Craig reported.
Craig said he was told a bad piece of track caused the derailment.
Crews had just checked the tracks in late March, something they did every 45 days.
No one was hurt, but crews expected it to be at least 6 p.m. before they had the train removed and the tracks fixed so rail traffic through the area could resume.
About 80 trains weren’t expected to be able to travel along the effected stretch of track Monday as a result of the derailment, Craig reported.
Hazardous materials crews were on the scene, but only as a precaution.
