COTTAGE GROVE, Minn. — About 30 train cars derailed near Cottage Grove on Saturday, and one went into the Mississippi River.
The accident happened shortly after 1 p.m. south of this St. Paul suburb, between the river and U.S. Highway 61, police officer Mike Vandervort said. He said one car ended up in the water and several others came to rest on the river bank.
There were no injuries, no toxic spills or environmental danger arising from the accident, Vandervort said.
Firefighters had cleared the scene by 4:15 p.m., he said.
Vandervort said the train belonged to BNSF Railway Co. and that railroad officials would be in charge of cleaning up the mess.
