WESTMINSTER, Colo. — A freight train derailed after striking a tree near Wadsworth Parkway and 95th Avenue Monday night, injuring one crew member.
Westminster Police said the northbound BNSF Train hit part of a tree on the track about 10:30pm last night, then continued on about 3,000 yards before going off the rails. One of the three BNSF crew aboard the train received minor injuries and was taken to the hospital.
The derailed train, four locomotives and 37 cars, was hauling building supplies, according to police, and there were no hazardous materials in the cars. One of the locomotives sustained a leak in its diesel fuel tank, but the Westminster Fire Department was able to seal the tank.
There are no roads or crossings obstructed by the derailment. Westminster Police are urging motorists to avoid the Wadsworth Parkway area for the morning and evening commute as emergency vehicles and large railroad equipment will be working in that area throughout the day. Wadsworth Parkway will be limited to one northbound lane. It is unknown how long it will take crews to clear the rail cars and debris.
Police and railroad officials are investigating how the debris ended up on the track and whether it was intentionally placed there.
